“How much does a website cost?” is the question we hear most. The honest answer: it depends on what the website needs to do. It's a bit like cars, a city runabout and a van are priced differently. In this article we explain what the price is made of, so you can compare quotes and avoid paying for things you don't need.
The three biggest price factors
1. Type of website
A business card site introduces you: who you are, what you offer, where to find you and how to get in touch. It is the simplest option and perfectly enough for most freelancers. A company website has more pages, a gallery, prices or news. An online store or a booking site has to handle orders, payments, customer emails and an admin panel, so it takes more work.
2. Scope
Every page means design, copy, images and testing on mobile and desktop. A five‑page site therefore costs more than a one‑page one. The good news is that many businesses do well with one longer page where everything is neatly laid out.
3. Extra features
Card payments, online bookings, multiple languages, a blog or customer accounts. Each feature adds work, but often pays for itself quickly. Online bookings alone can save hours of phone calls every week.
What to check in a quote
- Is the price final? Ask whether VAT is added and whether changes cost extra.
- Who owns the domain and hosting? They should be registered in your name so you are not tied to one supplier.
- Can you edit the site? Find out whether you can change texts and photos yourself or pay for every edit.
- Does it work on mobile? Most visitors now come from phones. A site that looks bad on mobile drives customers away.
- What happens after launch? Websites need updates and backups. Ask who takes care of that and what it costs.
Cheap template or custom design?
Ready‑made templates are cheap, but your site then looks like thousands of others and is often slow. A custom website is designed for your brand, loads fast and does exactly what you need. The price difference is usually smaller than you might expect, especially for a simple business site.
